The Amelia Plays

 The Magnetic Mr Shakespeare

To mark the 400th anniversary of the publication of Amelia Bassano Lanier’s book, Salve Deus, the first book of original poetry published by a woman, the Dark Lady Players are celebrating with several new plays.

On December 15, Manhattan Theater Source is presenting a one night festival of short plays about her life by New York City playwrights. Playwrights include Mozz Mendez, Vincent Marrano, Ed Malin, Maria Micheles, Alaina Hammond, Kathleen Potts, Heather Violanti, Lucile Scott and Michelle Poynton.

The plays examine her relationship with Christopher Marlowe, her relationship to Shakespeare, to her family, and her response to the compromise of being a great poet but unknown, and other issues.

Mr-Shakespeare-and-Amelia-A-Short-Play examines the evidence for her authorship. The Writing of Salve Deus describes the difficulty in writing the first book of original poetry published by a woman.

Here is a short presentation.

Further new play developments are expected in 2010.
